I spent a happy year at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993-4, attempting to understand International Relations (and failing; I switched to comparative politics), living luxuriously on the generosity of the splendid Thouron Award (and Fulbright for the travel) and getting far too fond of the vegetarian meatballs served up by the Magic Carpet lunch truck just off campus. So I am extremely touched and honoured that the university’s Penn Reading Project has selected The Big Necessity for next year. The Penn Reading Project gives out a copy of its chosen book (though last year the choice was a painting) to all freshmen (freshpeople) students. I think I’m the youngest choice, and the first woman to be chosen for twelve years (the last was Maxine Hong Kingston in 1998). Needless to say, I am extremely chuffed, not least to be in the company of Euripides, Voltaire and Graham Greene. And to be chosen by one of my alma maters (the other being Somerville College, Oxford, which has yet to want to inflict me or my book on its students or alumni), is even more gratifying.

I’ve been asked, gratifyingly, to chair the judging panel for this year’s WASH media award, administered by the excellent Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC for short). The WASH awards celebrate the best of sanitation- and hygiene-related journalism. Not forgetting water supply. They’ll be judged over the summer and awarded at World Water Week in September in Stockholm. Details of how to enter are below. Please send on to anyone who might be interested in applying.

The WASH Media Award 2009/2010 Competition

“Honouring the best in water supply, sanitation and hygiene journalism!”

The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) welcome entries for the third edition of the WASH Media Awards competition. This competition is open to journalists who publish or broadcast original investigative reports between March 2009 and April 2010 on water supply, sanitation or hygiene (WASH) issues in their countries.

The WASH Media Award initiative recognizes and supports the crucial role of the media in raising awareness of the importance of water, sanitation and hygiene services. It aims to help improve access to these services by having a positive influence on politicians, business persons, civil society representatives and individual citizens.

Journalists can submit one piece of work such as an article from traditional print or recognized online newspapers, magazines or journals; a radio broadcast; or a television documentary or report.

To be eligible, entries must be published or broadcast between 1 March 2009 and 1 April 2010. Articles or broadcasts can be submitted in French, English, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. Works not originally published or broadcast in one of these languages must be translated into one of those five competition languages.

Seven prizes will be awarded:

One in each of the five competition languages for developing country journalists

One for the best entry focussing on gender (’women and WASH’) for developing country journalists

One for the best entry from a non-developing country journalist

The winners will receive a cash prize and participate in the World Water Week in Stockholm in August 2010 as special guests of WSSCC and SIWI.

Submissions will be evaluated by an international jury of distinguished media professionals. Entries will be judged on the following criteria:
