I’m not sure how, but I managed to miss this Panorama documentary on “Britain’s Dirty Beaches.” I haven’t yet found a copy or seen it, but the accompanying site has some striking videos, including one from 1957, when the death of six year old Caroline Wakefield from water-borne polio, contracted from swimming amongst sewage, provoked her family into campaigning for cleaner beaches, with a Golden List of Beaches.
Happy birthday, meanwhile, to the excellent Surfers Against Sewage, who celebrate 20 years of magnificent efforts to clean up our coastline. Keep it up.
